Abstract: Reference designator silkSCReen is critical for PCBA assembly, rework, and traceability. Per IPC-7351B and IPC-2221, designs must ensure legibility, durability, and clearance, with detailed specifications below.

1. Font & Size Standards

Component Char. Height (mm) Line Width (mm) Aspect Ratio Typical Location
THT/Large IC ≥1.0(40mil) ≥0.15(6mil) 1:5–1:8 Top-right of body
SMD(≥0805) ≥0.8(32mil) ≥0.12(5mil) 1:6 Left or below component
Fine Pitch(0402) ≥0.6(24mil) ≥0.1(4mil) 1:7 Adjacent free area
BGA/Bottom-side Optional or ≥0.5(20mil) - - Diagonal extension zone

Key Rules:

  1. Char. height ≥ board thickness×0.6 (e.g., 1.6mm board → ≥0.96mm);

  2. Line width ≥ height/8 (prevents breakage).

2. Legibility & Contrast

  1. Ink Color Matching:

    Substrate Color Preferred Silk Min. Contrast Forbidden Scheme
    Green White 80% Yellow (<30%)
    Black Yellow 70% Dark Blue
    Blue White 75% Red
  2. Optical Inspection:

    • AOI lighting: RGB hybrid source at 30° tilt;

    • Grayscale contrast ≥60% (IPC-SM-840E 3.5.2).

3. Placement & Clearance

  1. Safety Spacing:

    • Char. edge to pad ≥0.2mm(8mil) (IPC-2221B 9.1);

    • Never cover test points/gold fingers/thermal pads.

  2. Orientation Uniformity:

    • Global reading direction:  (horizontal) or 90° (vertical);

    • 45° allowed in dense areas only if board-wide consistent.

  3. Special Components:

    • Connectors: Print near mounting holes;

    • Heatsinks: Move to adjacent free area with arrow indicator.

4. Durability & Manufacturability

  1. Adhesion Tests:

    • 3M 600 Tape Peel: Zero loss (Class 3);

    • Solvent Resistance: No smudging after 10 alcohol wipes (IPC-TM-650 2.4.28).

  2. Process Compensation:

    Process Error Compensation Method
    Screen misalignment ±0.1mm Expand characters by 0.15mm
    Laser engraving ±5% shrinkage Increase line width by 0.02mm

5. Rework & Traceability Optimization

  1. Critical Designators:

    • Add bounding box (0.2mm width) for BGAs/connectors;

    • High-value boards: Include QR codes (≥3×3mm, ≥4mil/dot res.).

  2. DFM Verification:

    • Valor NPI silkscreen conflict check (alerts if spacing<0.2mm);

    • Post-UV aging (50h) clarity retention ≥90% on first article.

Conclusion

Reference designator silkscreen must follow the "Trinity Principle":

  • Legibility: Tiered font sizes (0402: ≥0.6mm), contrast >70%;

  • Clearance: ≥0.2mm from pads, avoiding functional areas;

  • Durability: Pass tape peel/solvent tests (Class 3 zero loss).
    Design Redlines:

  1. Never use reverse colors (e.g., white on black);

  2. BGAs require external designators (no printing on body);

  3. Flex PCBs allow 0.5mm height but must add bounding boxes.
