SpaceX is requesting Taiwan's supply chain to relocate out of Taiwan?

Regarding recent rumors on the internet that "SpaceX is requesting Taiwan's supply chain to relocate out of Taiwan," the Ministry of EconomIC Affairs immediately contacted the relevant Taiwanese manufacturers. Industry insiders stated that it has been a normal practice to adjust production schedules according to customer demands in order to serve global clients. Neither before nor after the recent U.S. presidential election did they receive any notification from SpaceX requesting them to relocate out of Taiwan. The Ministry of Economic Affairs urges the outside world not to speculate excessively or sensationalize the issue and reminds the public to pay attention to the accuracy of information sources.

Taiwan's electronics and information and communications technology industries have long played a crucial role in the global supply chain, particularly in the fields of semiconductors and electronic components, where they hold an irreplaceable position. Currently, Taiwan boasts a well-established network of 46 electronic component industries, covering materials, PCBs, antenna components, cables, and power supplies. These not only supply leading satellite communication companies like SpaceX but also serve other international satellite and terrestrial telecommunications operators and equipment providers, ensuring a diversified layout in the trend of global multi-orbit satellite integrated services.

Moreover, the electronic component industry continues to deepen its research and manufacturing roots in Taiwan. Since 2021, the Ministry of Economic Affairs has supported 30 system and component manufacturers through thematic research and development guidance, successfully developing a variety of satellite ground equipment products for household, automotive, marine, and aviation use, and actively seeking to establish supply chain partnerships with global satellite communication service and equipment providers.

Facing the challenges of the U.S.-China technological competition, geopolitics, and supply chain decoupling in recent years, Taiwan's industries have quickly adjusted, achieving a global production layout across multiple countries and regions, demonstrating high production capacity flexibility and adaptability. Currently, Taiwan possesses independent research and manufacturing capabilities in satellite ground receiving equipment, with strong competitiveness. Regarding rumors of production relocation, the industry has clearly stated that this is not the case, and short-term political factors will not affect the supply chain partnerships between international satellite companies and Taiwanese manufacturers.

Previously, on November 5, Reuters reported that due to geopolitical considerations, there were market rumors that SpaceX, the U.S. space expLoRation technology company, was requesting Taiwan suppliers to relocate their manufacturing bases overseas. Currently, there are 46 Taiwanese manufacturers providing components and sensitive equipment to the global satellite industry, with about 12 directly supplying SpaceX.

Recently, Chip-Chip Corporation, a Taiwanese PCB manufacturer that has just become a SpaceX satellite component supplier, revealed that SpaceX has requested it to move production from Taiwan to Thailand to secure new orders, mainly due to geopolitical considerations. As the information was not public, the source refused to be named. SpaceX also declined to comment.

One source from among the numerous subcontractors providing components for SpaceX's Starlink satellite network products stated that due to geopolitical risks, SpaceX is requiring its manufacturers to produce outside of Taiwan, forcing at least one manufacturer to relocate production to Vietnam. Another source working with Taiwanese satellite component manufacturers claimed that SpaceX directly requested suppliers to transfer manufacturing overseas.

According to an investment consultant in Vietnam, SpaceX representatives expressed their intention to establish a satellite equipment manufacturing center in Vietnam during a private meeting in March 2023 and inquired about intellectual property protection issues.

When Reuters contacted the Ministry of Economic Affairs of Taiwan regarding the relocation of SpaceX suppliers from Taiwan, the Ministry responded that short-term political factors should not affect the supply chain relationships between international satellite companies and Taiwanese manufacturers.
